Title
Avocet Tower – BFRP Reinforced Topping Slabs
Context

Commercial mixed-use 22-story high-rise development comprising office space, hotel and parking structures.

Location

Bethesda, Maryland, USA

Challenge

The project required durable and efficient reinforcement solutions for topping slabs exposed to long-term environmental loading while maintaining fast construction schedules for a large-scale commercial development.

Ecotori's contribution

Design and implementation support for topping slabs reinforced with basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars, including design in accordance with ACI 440 methodologies and coordination of material validation requirements.

Outcome / impact
  • Implementation of BFRP reinforcement in a 22-story mixed-use commercial tower
  • Approximately 5,160 ft² of topping slabs reinforced with about 15,000 ft of BFRP reinforcement
  • Improved installation efficiency due to lightweight reinforcement handling
  • Reduced transportation and installation demands compared to conventional steel reinforcement
  • Contribution to long-term durability and lower lifecycle environmental impact through corrosion-resistant reinforcement systems
